This week, we will begin studying Native Americans. In recent years, some sports teams have stirred controversy over their use of Native American imagery as mascots/team names. Read the following article and respond to the questions that follow. www.huffingtonpost.com/sam-sommers/native-american-mascots_b_1546639.html--In your opinion, are Native American names used as a tribute or stereotype? Why do you feel this way?

I think they are used as a tribute because if you named someone or something after another, you would be looking up to tham and admiring them, not stereotyping.

I think they are used as a stereotype because you are naming something or someone after someone else and you don't now how the person you are naming after feels, you are not tribute them

Mya, This is my controversy to you. I think that some people really may use Native American names as a stereotype, but if you were to name your own football team, you would want it to be a name that seems masculine or tough. Especially since football is more of a male sport. Lets say you were to play in the dodge-ball tournament, you wouldn't want to name your team something like "little kids rule!" You would name it something cool or tough, like our school mascot. Mustangs are wild, fast and smart animals. Mrs. Pointe knows what we are capable of and she thought we could represent the mustang and it's traits. ;D ;D ;D

In my opinion, they are used as a stereo type, because I think people automatically assume that Native Americans are very strong just because they've done lots of stuff over the years. It doesn't really come to their mind that it could be offensive, therefor, that makes it a stereotype.

Suyan, I think you are right but i don't think that people naming football teams after Native American is all ways a tribute. The Native Americans did not like it when teams would take there names i think they should ask them if it ok for them to take there names.

Alonda, That is very true! But in the other hand, if you looked up to someone, for example; the Native Americans, you would be admiring them and paying tribute to them if you named them after someone or something. If your parents were to name you after your uncle, would you call that stereotyping? I do see your point but I have to disagree. Suyan Turatto

Mya and Suyan, I think both of you make good points. Mya, you express that naming teams after Native Americans can be offensive in some ways. Suyan, you express that it's actually looking up to them and admiring them. I think both of you have good points of view.
